On Monday, we posted the way-too-early opening odds for the Heisman Trophy. Two Alabama quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa, made the list — with incoming-Junior Hurts the favorite at 12/1. Tua was listed as the darkest of horses at 50/1 in some books and as favorable as 15/1 in others.
The money has come flooding in, however, and the public liked what they saw from the true freshman’s heroics in the College Football Playoff National Championship: In a span of 24 hours, Tagovailoa has now become a favorite with a trio of running backs: 2017 Heisman runner-up Bryce Love, the nation’s returning leading rusher Jonathan Taylor, and Ohio State manchild Josh Dobbins.
At 7/1, Tagovailoa has the best odds of any quarterback now, eclipsing Georgia’s Jake Fromm (12/1) and Arizona’s exciting Khalil Tate (14/1 -- seriously, Tate is going to put up gaudy numbers in new coach Kevin Sumlin’s system.)
To say that this is drastic movement in the odds is an understatement. More likely, call it a market overcorrection. While Tua will get a lot of love, good numbers, and plenty of highly visible games, he will likely not have the raw stats in Alabama’s system to overcome a 2000+ yard rusher from Ohio State or the lights-out production of a guy like Tate or West Virginia’s Will Grier. Once again, Bovada does not have Damien Harris listed...and Jalen Hurts has been taken off the board :(
