Jumbo Package: What does the Dan Enos hire tell us about the QB situation?

Happy Monday, everyone. We’ll open with a piece from Rainer Sabin about the latest staff hire, Dan Enos.

In the limited action he has seen, Tagovailoa has shown he can routinely deliver anticipatory throws in tight windows with the kind of precision that makes NFL scouts drool.

Yet it’s his willingness to hang in the pocket and assess his options that may be his most impressive quality, especially because Tagovailoa has the mobility to be an escape artist if the play breaks down or he can’t connect with the primary receiver.

It’s the mark of a quarterback that sees himself as a passer rather than a runner.

That’s the kind of player Saban seems to want and it’s certainly the type of quarterback Enos has coached.

Enos, as detailed in this great 2015 piece from Arkansas Fight, has always been about ball control and play action passing. He tends to like his quarterbacks under center, his tight ends to be threats in the passing game, and even made extensive use of - gasp! - a fullback. Mike Locksley, on the other hand, has been almost exclusively a shotgun spread guy. It will be interesting to see how this develops, but there is no question that Enos has always featured a quarterback that can throw it accurately down the field.

Enos spent some time with QB prospect Brock Purdy on his official visit this weekend.

“One of the first things I talked about to Mac was I’m not a big football fan,” Simmons said.

Jones answered: “That’s not what I’m here for.”

The young player was looking for more than just a chance to check off some hours to put his legal problems behind him. After the arrest, he apologized to the entire team.

“That wasn’t me,” he told them. “I’m sorry for embarrassing you guys and the program, and I’m going to do whatever I can to prove to you guys what kind of person I am.”

The soup bowl has been his proving ground.

The kid did his community service, and has continued to volunteer at the same location long after his debt was paid. That shows some fine character.

The staff is understandably focusing heavily on the secondary in the stretch run though National Signing Day.

Unsigned, uncommitted cornerback Isaac Taylor-Stuart, the No. 32 overall player in the country, returned to Tuscaloosa for the first time since July of 2016. The last time he left the Capstone, he named Alabama his leader. After wrapping up his official visit this weekend, the La Mesa (Calif.) Helix product was feeling how he did almost two years ago.

Four-star safety Julius Irvin will announce his college decision on Wednesday, January 31, he announced on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

The Anaheim (Calif.) Servite product is deciding between Alabama, USC, and Washington.

Irvin picked up an Alabama offer earlier this month and quickly setup an official visit last weekend (Jan. 19-21).

So, how did Taylor-Stuart’s comments make you feel, Coach?

Young finished 6 of 17 from the field.

”We made sure we stayed up close to him,” said Alabama star point guard Collin Sexton, who posted 18 points and was one of several Tide players that guarded Young at some point on Saturday. “That was me and (Herb Jones’) job coming into the game, and that was to contest him and make sure that he doesn’t just get free, open shots.”

Avery grabbed himself a signature win in year three, though it could be argued that he already had one against Rhode Island and we just didn’t know it yet. Herb has really come on in the second half of the season, and seems to be the secondary ballhandler at this point. His midrange shot still needs plenty of work, but the kid is a phenomenal defender and as smart as you’d expect a coach’s kid to be. Donta Hall has been a revelation, Dazon Ingram has been the glue and finally knocked down an open three, and Braxton Key is also looking better. If he can fully find his legs before March, we may have a fun ride ahead of us.

JK Scott, Alabama: Scott averaged 48.7 yards on six punts for the South. His punts included a 60-yarder. He also held for placements.

Yep, that sounds about right. JK is going to make some money for a long time.

Julio Jones Kia and Julio Jones Mazda will open Tuesday at 4301 Greensboro Ave in Tuscaloosa, according to a news release from his agents Darien Southerland and Tim Newton, of the BG AD Group. Jones will have a news conference that’s open to the public at the dealership Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Glad this got done for Julio. There were rumors that he had just sealed the deal before Kyle Shanahan spilled his coffee all over the contract and Matt Ryan threw it away.
