Alabama Baseball Releases Schedule

The 2021 Alabama baseball schedule has been released. The Tide finished 16-1 last year, the best winning percentage in school history, but had the season cut short the opening week of SEC play by the Covid pandemic. Coach Brad Bohannon’s fourth Alabama team has begun skill work with full practice set to begin on January 29th.

Coach Bohannon was pleased that the league settled on a full 56 game schedule with the normal 30 game SEC slate. The Tide will play a challenging out of conference schedule, starting with McNeese State on February 19th, 20th, and 21st. Wright State and Stetson will also come to Tuscaloosa and the team will travel to play College of Charleston on March 5th-7th. Bama will play the same 10 SEC teams that they were scheduled for last year, but in different order, opening at Arkansas on March 19th, and finishing with a murderers’ row of at Vanderbilt, at LSU, and hosting Mississippi State the last three weeks of the season.

Bohannon is excited about the upcoming season despite the unusual circumstances that cut the season short last year. Bohannon said he “was pleased with the shape the players came back in considering the lack of games in the spring and the summer leagues. The fall workouts went well and the team used the time to get back into baseball shape. The University closed at Thanksgiving break and the staff didn't see their players for seven weeks. Coach Bo was pleased with the conditioning of his athletes when they returned.

The fall practices started slowly, called “sloppy” by Bohannon, as a result of playing so little baseball in the spring and summer. As the fall went on the team improved, Bohannon telling the team that “you just need to get better at playing baseball, we have the talent”, going on to say that baseball is a sport of repetition.

In an interview with Roger Hoover, Bohannon said “I’m pleased with the roster. I feel like top to bottom we have a legitimate SEC team,” continuing that “we look good getting off the bus, we have an athletic, powerful, twitchy team.” When asked about returning left handed star pitcher Connor Prielipp, Bohannon said the second year freshman “is special, and “gives us a chance to win every Friday night.” Hoover asked about the rest of the pitching staff and was told that “Brock Guffey and Chase Lee are dynamic” at the back end of games and that for the Saturday and Sunday roles could go to any number of guys that can “run it up to 93-94 mph, with powerful secondary stuff.” Bohannon said we wants fans to come out and see his team play, and that you will see many future big leaguers on the field for both sides. However at this point we have no idea what the ability of fans to come to games will be. Rumors of 20-25% capacity haver been heard.
